What Is Isle of MTV Malta?
Since 2007, Malta has hosted one of Europe's most remarkable musical events. Isle of MTV — organised by MTV and Paramount — transforms the vast open square of Floriana Granaries into a concert venue for tens of thousands of fans, all free of charge. Previous headliners have included Lady Gaga, David Guetta, and Jason Derulo, placing this event firmly on the map of major European festivals.
What makes it genuinely unusual is the combination of scale and cost: this is Europe's largest free music festival. There are no VIP tiers, no premium tickets — register online, show up, and watch a global superstar perform against the backdrop of Malta's fortified skyline.
If you are planning a summer trip and looking for things to do, our Malta Summer 2026 Events guide covers the full calendar alongside Isle of MTV.
Katy Perry: Her First Malta Performance
Katy Perry has been confirmed as the 2026 headline act, arriving as part of her Lifetimes Tour in support of her seventh studio album 143. She told press she is "excited to visit Malta" — and 22 July will mark her very first performance on the Maltese Islands.
The Granaries stage is one of the largest temporary stages erected in Malta each year. Sound and lighting rigs typically rival indoor arena productions, and with no ticket price barrier, the crowd tends to be one of the most energetic and diverse you will encounter anywhere in the Mediterranean.

Floriana Granaries: The Venue
Floriana Granaries — known locally as Il-Fosos — is a large, flat public square in the town of Floriana, immediately outside the main gate of Valletta. Originally built as grain storage silos during the Knights of St John period, the sunken storage chambers run beneath the square and give the surface its distinctive raised appearance at the edges.
In terms of concert logistics, the square is one of the few spaces in Malta capable of holding the kind of crowd Isle of MTV generates. There are no obstructions and sight lines to the main stage are generally good across most of the area. Being outdoors in July, temperatures in the evening remain warm — typically 26–29°C — so dress lightly.
Valletta itself is a short walk from the Granaries. If you plan to explore the capital before or after the show, our Valletta attractions guide covers the main sights worth combining with an evening visit.
Malta Music Week (22–26 July)
Isle of MTV is the centrepiece of a broader five-day programme called Malta Music Week. From 22 to 26 July, venues across the island host club nights, beach parties, DJ sets and brand-sponsored events. Most of these are either free or low-cost entry, and they are spread across St Julian's, Paceville, Valletta and waterfront venues.
If you plan to extend your trip to cover the full week, it is worth booking accommodation early — July is peak season in Malta and hotels in St Julian's and Sliema fill quickly. For comparison, the Farsons Beer Festival runs slightly earlier in July and can be combined with Malta Music Week for a full summer festival itinerary.
How to Register and What to Bring
Registration is managed entirely through the official website: isleofmtv.com. There is no cost, but places fill up quickly once registration opens. In past years, registrations have closed well before the event date. Check the site regularly in spring and register as soon as your window opens.
Practical tips for the day:
- Arrive before gates open — queues for a crowd this size can be long
- Bring a reusable water bottle; hydration points are typically available on site
- No large bags or professional camera equipment
- Wear comfortable footwear — you will be standing for several hours
- The VisitMalta events calendar at visitmalta.com lists supporting events and any official updates
Getting There: No Parking, Plan Accordingly
There is no event parking at Floriana Granaries for Isle of MTV. The Maltese authorities strongly discourage driving on the night. The best options:
- Bus to City Gate: Malta's public bus network runs frequent services to the Valletta terminus at City Gate. From there, it is a five-minute walk through the Floriana gate to the Granaries. Our Malta bus guide covers routes and the Tallinja card.
- Walk from Valletta: If you are spending the day in Valletta, the Granaries are immediately adjacent — simply walk through the main gate.
- Taxi or rideshare: Book your return journey in advance; demand surges after the show ends.
History of Isle of MTV in Malta
Isle of MTV has been held at Floriana Granaries continuously since 2007, making it one of the longest-running branded music festivals in Europe. MTV chose Malta partly for its central Mediterranean location (accessible from much of Europe on short-haul flights), partly for the spectacular natural stage set the Grand Harbour region provides, and partly because the Granaries is one of the only venues in the country that can comfortably host a crowd of this scale.
Over nearly two decades, it has brought global pop, electronic and hip-hop acts to an island of just over half a million residents, and in the process become one of the most-searched annual events for travellers planning Malta summer trips.
