Summer kicks off: July events
Farsons Beer Festival
Malta's most-attended annual event. The Farsons Beer Festival brings together Maltese and international beers, live music across multiple stages, street food, and family entertainment at Ta' Qali National Park. Entry is free — you pay only for what you drink. Runs 10 nights. The festival is organised by Simonds Farsons Cisk, Malta's national brewery, and has been running for over 35 years. Book accommodation early as Valletta and Sliema hotels fill up during this period.
Malta Jazz Festival
Three nights of world-class jazz against the backdrop of Valletta's fortified Grand Harbour. The Malta Jazz Festival has hosted legends including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Norah Jones over the years. Performances take place on the Valletta waterfront with the Three Cities visible across the water. Tickets sell out weeks in advance — check VisitMalta's events calendar for exact dates and the 2026 lineup.
August: the high season peak
Glitch Festival — 10th Anniversary
Malta's premier electronic music event celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026 at Gianpula Village, with eight stages spanning techno, house, jungle and ambient. Past headliners have included Amelie Lens, Ben Klock, and Mall Grab. The festival grounds are inland, making them slightly cooler than the coast on August nights. Tickets typically sell out months in advance. The official lineup is announced on glitch.com.mt.
Village festas: the local calendar
Running throughout June to September, Malta's village festas are the most authentically local events on the island. Each village celebrates the feast of its patron saint with a band procession, fireworks, decorations, and street food — all free and open to visitors. Over 60 festas are held each summer across Malta and Gozo.
The biggest festas — Santa Marija (15 August) and St George in Victoria, Gozo — draw tens of thousands. For a full schedule, VisitMalta's events page lists dates by village. The fireworks are extraordinary by any standard.
Autumn classics: October events
Notte Bianca — Valletta White Night
One night a year, Valletta stays up until dawn. Notte Bianca (White Night) opens every palace, museum, gallery and cultural institution in the capital for free, filling the streets with performances, art installations, projections and live music across seven themed routes. Over 60 separate events take place simultaneously. The atmosphere — Valletta's baroque streetscapes lit at night with no admission charges anywhere — is unlike any other event in Malta. Plan to walk: parking is essentially impossible and the city is best experienced on foot. The nearest bus terminus is at City Gate.
BirguFest — Vittoriosa by Candlelight
Every October, the medieval fortified city of Vittoriosa (Birgu) — one of the Three Cities — switches off its electric lights for three nights and illuminates its streets entirely with thousands of traditional oil lamps and candles. The effect is extraordinary. Artisans, performers, and street food vendors fill the narrow lanes. The setting is a living-history experience: Vittoriosa was the first capital of Malta and home to the Knights of St John in the 16th century. Free entry. Access by ferry from Valletta Waterfront or by bus. Very busy on Saturday night — arrive early or on the Friday.
Planning your trip around events
If you are flying in on Delta's new direct JFK–Malta service (running June–October 2026), the late July window gives access to the Beer Festival while avoiding the absolute peak accommodation crunch of mid-August. The first two weeks of October are arguably the best overall combination: Notte Bianca, BirguFest, cooler temperatures (22–25°C), and post-peak hotel rates.
For the best restaurant experience around these events, our Valletta food guide covers dining near the main event venues, and the Three Cities guide includes eating options in Vittoriosa for BirguFest.
