What is the Farsons Beer Festival?
The Farsons Beer Festival is organised by Simonds Farsons Cisk, Malta's national brewery, which has been producing beer on the island since 1928. The festival has run for over 35 years and is the single most-attended event on the Maltese calendar — drawing visitors from across Europe alongside locals.
The format is deliberately accessible: walk in, get tokens or a festival card, and drink your way through the bar stalls. There is no VIP tier, no expensive general admission, and no obligatory package. The democratic format is half the appeal.
The beers
The Farsons portfolio is front and centre:
- Cisk Lager — Malta's most consumed beer, a crisp 4.2% lager brewed in Mriehel since 1929
- Cisk Excel — lower-calorie version, popular with the health-conscious crowd
- Cisk Chill — light, fruit-forward lager
- Blue Label Ale — maltier, English-style session ale
- Hopleaf Pale Ale — Farsons' craft offering, hop-forward
- Lacto — Malta's iconic milk stout, darker and sweeter
Alongside the core range, the festival typically features 80–100 international guest beers — Belgian Trappist ales, German wheat beers, Czech pilsners, British ales, and rotating craft options. The exact 2026 international lineup is announced in the weeks before the festival at farsonsbeerfestival.com.
Food
The festival is full of food stalls and benefits from its park setting — you can eat and drink in the open air. Expect:
- Traditional Maltese food: ftira (local flatbread with fillings), pastizzi, rabbit stew
- Street food: burgers, kebabs, grilled meats, loaded fries
- Pizza and pasta stations
- Desserts and gelato
Quality varies by stall. Prices are festival-standard — expect to pay €8–14 for a main meal. For more of an evening dining experience before or after the festival, our Mdina dining guide covers restaurants just minutes from Ta' Qali, and the guide to Maltese food explains what to order if you want to try local dishes.
Music and entertainment
Multiple stages run simultaneously each evening. The programming covers pop, rock, traditional Maltese brass bands, and tribute acts, with the scale increasing on Friday and Saturday nights. Past years have seen headline performances draw crowds of 40,000–50,000 on peak evenings. The entertainment guide for 2026 is published at farsonsbeerfestival.com closer to the date.
Getting there
Bus: The most practical option. Routes 56 and 58 run between Valletta and Ta' Qali. Late-night festival services are added during the event period — check Malta Public Transport for the augmented schedule. The Malta bus guide covers fares and the Tallinja card.
Taxi / ride app: Bolt and eCabs serve the venue. Expect surge pricing after midnight on Friday and Saturday. Pre-booking the return trip is advisable. See our Malta taxi guide for app options.
Driving: On-site parking is available but can be slow to exit after 11pm. If driving, arrange a designated driver or pre-book a taxi for the return.
From Valletta or Sliema: Ta' Qali is approximately 10km from both, a 15–20 minute drive in light traffic.
Practical tips
- Cash or card: Bring cash as backup — card machines at busy stalls can be slow. ATMs are available on site but queue on peak nights.
- Clothing: Late July in Malta averages 30–32°C during the day, dropping to 24–26°C by midnight. Light clothing is fine; the site is outdoors.
- Weeknight vs weekend: Weeknights (Monday–Thursday) are significantly less crowded and more relaxed. Friday and Saturday evenings draw the largest crowds.
- Under-18s: The festival is family-friendly with dedicated children's entertainment in earlier evening hours. Those under 18 cannot purchase alcohol.
- Accessibility: Ta' Qali is a flat park site with paved paths throughout. Generally accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
